What this course is

This is not a standard course — it is a preparation week followed by an official RYA examination.

  • The training is tailored to your level
  • The focus is on refining, not teaching basics
  • The course ends with an exam by an independent RYA examiner

Your certificate depends on your performance in the exam.

Who this course is for

This course is designed for experienced sailors ready to certify their skills.

You should have:

  • RYA Coastal Skipper level (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong skippering confidence
  • Experience in navigation, boat handling, and decision-making
  • Typical minimum experience:
  • ~800 nautical miles (or ~400 with Coastal Skipper course)
  • ~30 days at sea
  • At least 2 days as skipper
  • Night sailing experience

This is a high-level assessment, not a learning-from-scratch course.

What you’ll be tested on

The Yachtmaster Coastal exam assesses your complete ability as a skipper.

You will be examined on:

  • Skippering and decision-making
  • Advanced boat handling (close quarters, anchoring, berthing)
  • Passage planning and navigation
  • Pilotage (including night and restricted visibility)
  • Safety and emergency situations
  • Meteorology and situational awareness
  • Rules of the road (COLREGs)

You may be tested on anything from the full RYA syllabus up to this level.

The experience

This is an intensive, high-level week focused on performance.

Typical flow

Preparation days: Skill refinement, mock scenarios, instructor feedback

Exam (1–2 days):

  • You take command of the yacht
  • Complete real passages
  • Answer theoretical and practical questions

The exam can last 6 hours to 2 days, depending on candidates

What you gain

By passing the exam, you will:

  • Receive the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence
  • Be qualified to skipper a yacht on coastal passages (day & night)
  • Demonstrate a high level of seamanship and responsibility

Typically, this allows you to skipper up to ~60 nautical miles from a safe haven

From certification to opportunities

This qualification opens new possibilities:

For advanced sailors

  • Greater confidence on longer and more demanding passages
  • Recognition of your skills at an international level

For professional use

  • With commercial endorsement, you can:
  • Work as a skipper on small commercial vessels
  • Get paid sailing opportunities
