What this course gives you
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is the most important entry-level certification for powerboats.
It is widely recognised and is the basis for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), which is required in many countries to drive or charter a boat.
In many cases, this is effectively your “license” to operate a powerboat up to 10m.
Who this course is for
This course is ideal if you:
- Have no previous experience
- Want to learn to drive a powerboat safely
- Plan to rent or charter small boats
- Want a fast, practical introduction to boating
No prior experience is required — you can start from zero.
What you’ll learn
This is a hands-on course with most time spent on the water.
You’ll cover:
- Boat handling at low and high speed
- Close-quarters manoeuvring (marinas, tight spaces)
- Coming alongside and leaving a berth
- Anchoring and securing to a buoy
- Man overboard recovery
- Driving at planing speed
- Basic navigation and pilotage
- Rules of the road (COLREGs)
- Safety procedures and emergency handling
These are the core skills needed to operate a powerboat safely and confidently.
The experience
2 intensive days on the water
- Focus on practical training (majority of time afloat)
- Step-by-step progression from basic to confident handling
- Continuous assessment — no final exam
By the end, you will be able to handle a powerboat independently in suitable conditions.
What you gain

- Receive the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate
