The RYA VHF course is a comprehensive one-day shore-based program followed by an assessment lasting between 30 minutes and 1 hour. Participation in our VHF course, which includes GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System), requires some pre-course study on your part.

Who this course is for
- Skippers and crew using a VHF radio
- Anyone planning to charter a boat
- Students progressing to Day Skipper or Yachtmaster
No prior experience required.

- Communication procedures with marinas, coastguard & vessels
- Distress calls (Mayday), urgency (Pan-Pan), safety messages
- Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
- Radio protocol, channels & phonetic alphabet
- Basics of GMDSS and maritime safety systems

Training & exam
- Practical, scenario-based training
- Use of real/simulated radios
- Short written + practical exam
